Apex Research Councils Drive Ayush Innovation Under AYURGYAN Scheme

New Delhi: In a major push to enhance scientific credibility and integration of traditional systems with modern medicine, the Ministry of Ayush has empowered five Apex Research Councils to promote evidence-based research in Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathy, Siddha, and Yoga & Naturopathy.

The Apex Research Councils – CCRAS, CCRUM, CCRH, CCRS, and CCRYN – are independently conducting studies in clinical research, pharmacology, medicinal plants, drug standardisation, and literary documentation.

Ministry has rolled out AYURGYAN Scheme, offering financial grants to public and private medical and research institutions for advancing Ayush-based R&D.

Apex Research Councils: Research Output Over the Past Three Years
  • Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences: 189 studies conducted, 522 published
  • Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine: 104 conducted, 484 published
  • Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy: 184 conducted, 88 published
  • Central Council for Research in Siddha: 32 conducted, 195 published
  • Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy: 63 studies conducted

In collaboration with ICMR, the Ministry has established the Ayush-ICMR Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research at AIIMS campuses in Delhi, Jodhpur, Nagpur, and Rishikesh.

These centres focus on gastro-intestinal disorders, women and child health, geriatric care, and cancer treatment, respectively.

Additional initiatives include:

  • Unani Integration: MoUs with institutions like AIIMS, Jamia Millia Islamia, and NIPER to advance evidence-based Unani medicine.
  • Siddha OPDs: Integrated Siddha OPD for cancer care at All India Institute of Ayurveda and Safdarjung Hospital.
  • Homoeopathy Integration: CCRH operates homoeopathic units in allopathic hospitals such as Safdarjung Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College, and is conducting clinical trials at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, among others.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, presented this information in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
